It is quite frequent for university teachers to avoid the issues of so-called ‚basic teaching'. Not so Ulrike Theresia Wegele: her organ method is based upon a well-considered systematic that presents the development of consciousness for sound, rhythm, and movement as a creative process of discovery. The selected pieces display in small scale the entire bandwidth of style that is the indispensable foundation for later conservatory studies.
My warmest recommendation for organ teachers, students, and enthusiasts!

The new organ method by Ulrike Theresia Wegele is a very creative, lively, and attractive way of learning to play the organ.
Thanks to profound research and perfect knowledge of the repertoire Ms Wegele succeeds in addressing and covering all characteristics of the instrument. Trio playing, different aspects of pedal technique, and the art of improvisation are immediately addressed and developed. The whole concept is conclusive and meticulous and is presented in a didactically perfekt manner.
The examples composed by herself are artistically interesting and pedagogically rewarding.
An excellent and highly recommendable method!

The organ method by Ulrike Theresia Wegele promises to open up an entirely new audience of people genuinely interested in the instrument for actually learning to play it. Quite a few people, mainly children, are fascinated by the timbral richness of the king of the instruments and would love to play it without taking the time-consuming and potentially motivation-draining (however still pedagogically and artistically sensible) detour via learning the piano first. By integrating improvisation from the very beginning the foundation for liturgical organ playing is laid, an urgent desideratum in the face of the ubiquitous lack of organists. The congregations will be grateful to the author for all organists who will be trained in leading their chants on the basis of this method!

Professor Wegele has a deep well of experience and knowledge in organ pedagogy, having taught organ at every level for many decades. She understands the importance of developing fine technique from the very beginning of one's study, and does a great service to the profession by creating a resource such as this that can be used either in conjunction with traditional lessons or by autodidacts who seek to engage in self-study. Her "user-friendly" approach differs from the majority of technique books from the very outset, as users are invited to sit at the organ's manual and pedal keyboards even before it is established that they have basic note-reading ability. Basic music reading and keyboard technique are developed in a logically organized sequence through text, music and demonstration video clips accessed through the author's website. She also integrates into each volume of her study the related skills of composition, improvisation and transposition, which encourages the beginning student to exercise creativity from the very beginning of their study. The author gradually introduces the development of varied touches and their role in realizing the music's style and language which helps the student appreciate from the outset how important note lengths are in expressive organ playing. In short, this is an innovative new resource in organ pedagogy which can meet a need, especially for those with no prior keyboard background but a passion to learn the organ.

This organ method is exciting! With this initially somewhat trite statement I want to express: one is always excited to see the next page, the next step, the next subject. What in earlier methods sometimes appears as obtrusive methodology—always one step after the other, and never too large a step—, is here replaced by a colourful kaleidoscope of parallel progressive impulses. But still there is never too great a leap; progress is made always ambitiously, but never overtaxingly. There are, for example, exercises for silent finger changes, and on the very next page one finds a presentation of various short note values and their articulation. After two pages of playing in two and three parts (transparency!) we find homophonic polyphony (timbre imagination!). Conspicuous also the very smart (and, once again, colourful) repertoire selection, the author not shirking away from sensible cuts. As if in passing she also explains technical terms, and musical theory, too, finds its place. For daily musical gymnastics the good old scales, including fingerings, are also interspersed.

I wish to especially draw favourable attention to the constant inclusion—or, better: integration—of improvisation. Everyone who teaches years after years of improvisation knows how difficult it is to release an improvisation inhibition learnt at an early age; and here this method opens up the doors wide. Naturally I was especially interested in this aspect of the work.

Some especially felicitous examples: a short movement from the partita 'Ach, wie flüchtig, ach, wie nichtig' by Helmut Eder is taken as a point of departure for improvising a similar piece while also being asked to explore fitting registrations. The Eder piece as such is almost elementary in technical terms but characterized by consequent motivic work. A partita movement by Hans Haselböck aims at a different goal. Here, the learner is asked to try out different kinds of colourization, but also of widening the range by using different intervals. This and many other examples have been chosen in such a way that an insouciant use of dissonances results almost by itself; the mostly deep-rooted fear of 'wrong notes' in improvising is imperceptibly neutralized.

All in all a highly valuable addition to the pedagogic repertoire, especially in view of the self-education component!
